Owning your own website and copyright laws

If i plan on making a website that displays my own idea but pertains to a copyright (say for example: The New York Giants), what are my limitations as far as using the name in my website? Can i not mention the name New York Giants at all? Can i rejer to them as the NYG? Can i put their team colors in the backround of my site? I just would like to know my limitations as far as it pertains to the law (as if the New York Giants can sue me if they got wind of my site.)Thank you!
Answer1:I suggest this:Create some independient, but related to NYG site. For Example : http:crazyfornygfans.comYou are not saying you are part ( or owner or partner) of NYG, you are just creating an independient club of NYG fans. Make your own logo, must be different from NYG but using same colors.
Answer2:You might want to look up the concept of Fair Use, which may allow you limited use of certain copyrighted things for comment, criticism or parody without having to get permission or pay anything. How much of the NYG material you could use would depend on the nature or your site, and even whether or not you were making a profit from using their materials.Heres a bit of what wikipedia has to say on fair use:Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 17 U.S.C. § 106 and 17 U.S.C. § 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include:1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; 2. the nature of the copyrighted work; 3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and 4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. If you ask for, and get permission, you can do pretty well anything. Have you thought about asking?
