Does my period of notice of 3 months for getting the sack apply also for any reduction in salary or work hours

My boss wants to reduce my working hours & accordingly my salary (I am a salaried GP) without giving me even the 3 months notice which would be the minimum period of notice eg for termination of employment (I worked there for over 2 years now). My boss sais there are financial difficulties the practice (more than 10 employees, so not a v.small company) experiences and at present there is not enough income for paying everybody the same salary as before given there are less patients per GP. I am supposed to agree to the above reduction of working sessions & salary to come into effect in less than 1 month. The fear is that otherwise I would fully loose my job. Is this not ilegal from my boss not to give me enough time (at least 3 months) before a reduction in work&salary, ie the same as for eg a termination of employment? I would be very grateful for any advice from anybody who has some knowledge in these matters. Thanks. Ralf.--Answer1:No this is quite reasonable. You havent lost your job just had hours/salary reduced. One thing I would mention though is that this could be a breach of contract and if forced through you could resign and take the practice to a tribunal for unfair dismissal! This is possible because as you have been there for 2 years and presumably worked the same number of hours for that period, then the number of hours worked becomes an unwritten, but still enforceable, part of your contract. However, this depends on what your contract says. If there is a clause that says you must agree to reduced hours/salary written into it then you have no case. This can be a bit of a gamble though as how will a tribunal be viewed by another potential employer, in your case another practice. You have some difficult choices and if I was in your position two months ago, I would have gone for the reduced hours and not been made redundant. Its a difficult time for everybody.
