Hi,I had a plumber coming to my house because of some heating problem. In the end, the guy spent 1h30 at my home (not doing much), did not manage to solve, broke a thermostat and then invoiced me for £225!!!Is it legal or am I allowed not to pay as he did not repair anything in the end? Many thanks in advance for your help!M..--Answer1:talk to him or the company that he works for... you cant just not pay.. and by talk i mean complain.--Answer2:If you tell the contractor, on a trouble-shooting call, that you will only pay him/her if they find the problem, no matter how long they search, you probably will have to trouble-shoot the problem yourself. If a person is there 1 1/2 hours trying to help you, they deserve to be paid. Tell them up front if you are not going too..--Answer3:Check the invoice, if its for work done then you can ask him to reduce his charges because its too high by any standard. In the absence of a contract, the best course of action is to come to a compromise..--Answer4:As with all goods and services, they must be suitable for purpose and of satisfactory quality etc. A plumber is not entitled to be paid an extortionate rate just be being at your house. He has to do something while he is there to justify the money. In this case it is clear that he has not earned his money, and if anything he owes you for the broken thermostat. You are entitled to insist that he does the work he has been paid for, or refunds you. If they fail to do this you have a strong case to take them to the small claims court.
